On the way, after 1h30 drive, there is the option to take a break at Skuon, affectionately known as Spiderville Cambodia, the popular place for Cambodian and foreign travelers where it is possible to taste the local delicacy of tarantula fried and other fried insects. We make a short stop to amaze you around this market in Spider Town, you can also try various seasonal local fruits from the region and islands in the Mekong River. However, if you don’t want to taste spider, cricket, scorpion, grasshopper or other insects, this is also a good place to take pictures.
After a 20-minute break, we continue northwest on National Highway #6. This was an ancient Angkor route and we stop at Kampong Kdei to see one of the ancient Angkor bridges built in the 12th century. Spean Praptos or local resident called Dragon Bridge, it has over 20 arches and is a spectacular sight, reinforcing the impression that the Khmers were like the Romans of Southeast Asia. The bridge is in good condition and looks impressive.
Next, we will travel to one of the largest and least visited villages on the Great Tonle Sap Lake, Kampong Khleang is the largest community located on the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and is 55 km from Siem Reap. It has more than 10,000 inhabitants, most of whom live from the fishing industry. We discover the canals in the wet season or the streets in the dry season of this incredible village. In the rainy season, the houses seem to float, as the water laps over the verandas, but in the dry season, towering piles are revealed, the houses almost look like wooden skyscrapers. We will take a boat and navigate the open waters of the large lake to see the floating village, flooded mangrove forest and learn about this incredible natural flood barrier. All animals live on water, pigs, dogs, chickens, ducks and of course people, all competing for space in this incredible floating city.
