We travel southwest about 40 minutes to the floating village of Mechrey where you will visit the lifestyle of floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake, beautiful nature, landscapes and birds. Mechrey floating village is located on the northern edge of the Tonle Sap Lake, west of Siem Reap city. It is an alternative destination to the well-visited Chong Kneas for those who want to admire this unique and traditional way of life living on the water. With around 700 Cambodian and Vietnamese families all living in floating houses and most earning their living from the fishing industry, surrounded by flooded forest, Mechrey can be visited all year round during the wet and dry seasons, just 20 km from the city center.
You’ll take a wooden boat to the village where you will get a glimpse of daily life in Cambodia, discover an amazing and different way of life in the largest freshwater lake in South Asia, Tonle Sap. You get a fascinating insight into local life as you explore the village, slowly boarding a private boat along the canal to enter the medieval floating villages, where houses float on the water, the bamboo cage fish farm, the boathouses, fishing-boats with all kinds of fishing equipment and everything that lives on the water, animals like chickens, ducks, dogs and vegetable farms. It offers the wonderful opportunity to observe life on and around the river during the trip. Authentic images of life on the river that you cannot see from land.
